I think he was referring to the facts that both of our countries began as colonial interests of the British Empire of the time, both our nations had similar issues with the indigineous populations of our respective lands, and both our nations had, and still have, strong ties to our mother country, England. Also, most of the ruling class populations of both our nations are of Anglo-Saxon and/or other Western European origin.

So, yeh, the roots ARE similar; where our countries have each grown from those roots is what makes each nation unique.
