Upgrade now a little for cheap, or wait for more money?
I have an AMD 2000+ processor right now, and could upgrade to a 2600+ (the max upgrade for my chipset) for about sixty or seventy dollars.
How much improvement do you think I would see, if any? I have 768 MB of Ram, and a Geforce4 MX 4000 graphics card.
I can wait a little while and buy an FX5900 for a hundred and twenty, I imagine, in a few months.
Or I can wait even longer and save money to get a whole new chipset. *And* graphics card.
Anyway, do you think I should upgrade now to 2600 for cheap, or upgrade later to FX5900 for more expensive, or just wait and get a new chipset after a couple more months of saving?

Re: Upgrade now a little for cheap, or wait for more money?
Hi,
I would say don't upgrade by small amounts.
I think I read somewhere, upgrade when you multiple the processor speed by 10x.
So, you need to wait for a 20000 !!!!
I've recently gone from a 33MHz 486 to a 2400+.
How about a better idea: upgrade to Linux !
That way you can have my 486.
Donald.

the CPU upgrade is too small to notice....
the graphix could make a nominal difference...
ALWAYS a good idea to upgrade in chunks.....you'll have better luck in avioding incompatibility issues...

they are right, definitely not worth the money... you would have to use sandra to benchmark it to even be able to tell the difference... I'd wait till 64bit becomes more stable...

Agreed. If you were going to spend the $, put it on RAM rather than CPU.

I concur on the wait it out. People should really only upgrade to next generation hardware. If your case, it would be the Athlon FX's, Intel Prescott, etc.
