HD DVD and Dual Layer

yeah fella's im a lil confused, im thinkin dual layer discs and HD DVD's were the same thing all along, im startin to think they are not, please someone correct my stupidity

my HP pavilion came with a DVD+R DL burner, so like the genious that i am , i thought this meant i could copy , burn HD Movies. i did some research , HD DVD's hold up to 30 gigs! dual layer dvd's only hold up to 8gigs, so burning a HD movie would be impossible, but a regular dvd on the other hand, would be pretty much flawless on a dual layer correct?

i found this out in a bad way when i tried to copy Planet Earth, 8 gigs for each disc, my dvd+r only held 4.7 gigs, yes the copy looked like crap, which is a shame because of how awesome the regular copy looked, so yeah people dont be stupid like me , and if im still wrong about sumthing please let me know now , thanks

nope you are correct, HD dvd's are a completely different beast than just regular DL dvd's. however I would not suggest at this time you invest in an hd dvd recorder as the technology is still new and in competition with blue-ray which will hold upwards of 70gb. noone knows as of yet which is gonna be the dominating force for HD standards..

Re: HD DVD and Dual Layer

not only is there knock-down-drag-out going on between the two technologies ... check out the prices on a blu-ray drive !!
which ever type wins out , i believe part of the victory will be due to how fast the manufacturers can flood the market and drive down the price .

sony boned-out years ago during the beta vs. vhs "war" . sony only authorized a couple of other outfits to manufacture beta machines .

jvc on the otherhand , had many manufacturers authorized and this drove the price down ... this meant more sales/rentals/selection of machines and the same with vhs tapes which in turn was a strong point for consumers/suppliers to take into account ... the attractor/snowball effect .

mechanical differences aside , the quality of the beta picture was always slightly better . for a while there was a "quality war" going on ... improvements by both sides pretty much kept this aspect of sales nulled .

Re: HD DVD and Dual Layer

There is another format being released for hd in europe..

HD VMD

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hd_vmd

uses a red laser and holds 20 to 40 + gb

But I don't think they have a chance since HDdvd and blue ray have a head start.

HDdvd has less/better compression (slightly better pic quality)
sony has exclusives, hddvd has exclusives..

but Hddvd now has porn on there side.. but then again.. that will only account for a small chunk of sales.

I myself bought an hddvd player when they first came out.. Love it.. pic quality is awesome.. but.. at the same time I don't wanna be with a coaster box in a year..

hope i made the right choice.

Re: HD DVD and Dual Layer

i personally think in the long run hd-dvd will win. mostly because of production costs. if sales of hd-dvd players go up just a little bit they can afford to start manufaturing more units and making prices drop. Blueray on the other hand requires a speciall blue lazer unit that is expensive and slow to produce no matter what you do. yes blue ray holds more but most movies on blue ray don't use more than 1/2 the space on the disk.

on a side note: once sony moves games to blueray and starts to up to file size(what game needs 70gb's of data??? pc games maxx out a 5gbs) the load times are going to SUCK!!!! the ps3's blueray drive is a standard speed blueray drive which has a low speed and a low data rate as soon as the ps3 has to start loading large files performance is going to go way downhill and you might as well flip the tv to a different channel for 15 minutes in order to not go mad while waiting for the game to load. the reason that microsoft does not include hd-dvd player in the 360 is they don't want games to take up that much space. Like look at oblivion: 100 plus hour game and fits on one double layer dvd. the nintendo wii doesn't even play dvd's because that's not what it is made to do and it is out selling every other console. blue ray is going to die very quickly. sony is expected to lose 5 billion dollars on the ps3 this year.

yeah but hd-dvd and dl-dvd are much different animals.
