Need help with an IP address reset (I think)

click on one of our sponsors! OR REMOVE ADS
Alright techies, I need help. I just moved and had a new high speed internet system installed on my desktop. Unfortunately my computer won't read the new ip address because it is stuck looking for the old one which it (of course) can't find.

So how do make the computer find the new ip address? Thanks.

You don't have to tell me. I already know I am a computer moron.

are you behind a router? If so, is it the same router you had before? If not, how is your PC connected to the internet?

Have you gone into Control panel and network connections and used the New Connection Wizard?

The connection goes from the wall, through a coaxial line, into the modem, and then directly to the computer. When I plug the same wire into the wireless router I have, I can pick up the signal with the laptop (hence I am using the internet right now). It just won't work on the desktop.

I haven't tried the control panel. What exactly do I do there? thanks.

If you changed providers and the modem was set for your old provider you may have to re-estabish the connection by running your set up disk. I have DSL-modem and if it becomes reset I have to run the setup program to get the provider to assign an IP# to the modem.

Since the the wireless router works you may want to see if you can connect your desk top to it instead of the modem. I don't have a wireless router so I'm not sure if they include a T10/100 connection. If you can get it connect to the router you'll probably need to run the wireless network wizard in control panel to set it up for the two connections.

To have both the router and the modem connected to the provider, you would need two IP address which you would have to pay extra for.

Start, Run, type in cmd and click OK.

Then type in ipconfig /release and hit enter. Then when your prompt returns type ipconfig /renew

okay. I did the reset and I got 0.0.0.0 for the ip address and the subnet mask.

When I did renew, I got: No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 3 while it has its media disconnected.
An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 4: The requested service provider could not be loaded or initialized.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: Need help with an IP address reset (I think)

ALL HAIL THE HOUSEHOLD PC-GEEK!!!... The first line of defence against the endless barrage of "issues" that arrise while learning the "care and feeding of the convienience called the modern PC!" Often forgotten, rarely understood, maligned for public sport, and let us not speak of the idea of being paid... but when the s**t hits the not so proverbial cooling fan... all together a welcome presence to have appear!!!

There is another "command prompt" command that is very useful if one's winsock (windows sockets) stack gets stuck or confused. Click on START> RUN and type CMD into the input area of the RUN window -> In the COMMAND PROMPT window that should now have opened up on your screen type the command NETSH and press ENTER -> After the prompt changes to the netsh>\ prompt type the command WINSOCK RESET CATALOG (note: the CATALOG part is not needed for but a particular version of Windows but if added to the command it will not hurt anything that I have seen) and then press ENTER again -> after the "Winsock has been reset" response appears it will be nesessary to restart the system... so, whatever your routine... restart the system.
When things have booted up again the previously tangled IP stack will refresh itself with squeaky clean addresses and such. (they may still be the same numbers as before but any problems in the IP configuration will have the best opportunity to correct themselves with the newly cleaned slate you have made for it!
For really stubborn networking "issues" find and download the file WinsockXPFix.exe and run it according to its simple "on-screen" instructions.
And if that doesn't fix the prob... curse at the offending, infernal computer and threaten it with any fate that you feel appropriate to the moment, give it a set time to comply with your demands or it will suffer the alternative(s) and abruptly stomp from the room to go busy yourself until the time is up! It doesn't work to resolve the issue at hand very often... but has proven to relieve the pent up stress that has been building behind your otherwise calm facial expresion. (note: interestingly enough, on the rare occasion, threatening physical violence upon a seemingly inanimate, non-sentient collection of manufactured electronics has actually seemed to resolve the issue! So never say never! It's a matter of being believable about the whole emotional outburst... one slip and your PC will know that you don't mean what your saying... and then YOU'LL be IT'S BE-OTCH for thr remainder of your relationship together! BE FIRM!

Oh dear! poor TheCowboy, the only advice that came close was from elfoozo. We all like to make networking so complicated don't we. I think changing to dynamic IP configuration was all that was probably needed, this would have automatically corrected the subnet mask and DNS server details. Thank goodness for women.
