I wanna know why/how/and what makes an Import better than a Domestic, or a Domestic Better than an import. Which one do you think will be the other in a few years? Someone start it.

Re: Imports vs Domestics?

Quality! Period! J.D.Powers latest survey revealed that Hyundai is now equal in quality to Toyota based on last years responses to problems per car reported by consumers. That was quite a shock, but it shows what can happen when a carmaker takes it's customers seriously.

Re: Imports vs Domestics?

one o f the biggest arguements around today. I am a co-owner of a performance company and i deal with both but definately more imports than anything else and to be honest there isnt one better than the other it really comes down to personal preference and goals. With the imports you see alot more response from the aftermarket and its the popular thing. now that aside you have to look at the actual differences. Imports tend to be higher in the technology dept. There is also a lack of real performance offerings from the domestic three. Not to say there arent any but there are a lot more on the import side. Domestic companies are also more worried about putting out alot of different care. like chevy has a ad campaign going that says "10 new cars" most import companies aside from Totota have even half of that. The import companies tend to me more oriented towards high quality and longevity.

So really its up to personal preference.

p.s. my personal reason for going to the imports from day one is the imports grasp of turbos! i cant picture life with out BOOST!

Re: Imports vs Domestics?

Well Domestics Have been getting on the Turbo bangwagon as of late too. The new Cavilier Turbo, The SRT-4 Neon. But to me, I think imports are the way to go becuase they make cars with good technology, low base price. I think Toyota needs to watch out for Nissan. They are poping out new cars left and right.

But if your looking for a truck, Domestic is the way to go. I dont think the japs know how to make a truck yet. That can live up to a chevy at least.

You know, it's funny to hear you talk about imports because everywhere i look now and even on British tv all i see are American SUV's and big bulky American cars. It seems the europeans have finaly caught onto cars you have grown up with and arn't worried about our smaller in scale roads.

most of the imports are made here now. my Honda's drivetrain was assembled in Japan, but the rest of it was built in the US.
for me, i feel like i am getting a lot more car for my money with the imports vs domestic vehicles.

Re: Imports vs Domestics?

Another advantage that imports have over domestics is the technology that companies such as Honda and Toyota are commited to. These were the first companies to bring their gas/electric hybrid concepts to the roads which focus on a really important issue: better fuel economy.

In a new era in which gas prices are a huge concern for the public, Honda and Toyota have already created cars that help deal with this issue and are continuously working on the technology. They're YEARS ahead of the competition.

While it's good to see that there will be some domestic companies that look to this route in the future, it's sad to say that they're already behind the game.

Re: Imports vs Domestics?

The domestic market are going to be bringing out new hybrids to the market soon. Dodge is first to be jumping on the hybrid bandwagon I belive coming out with a New intrepid Hybrid, and trying to fix their gas guzzling mistake, a new Hybrid Durango. Im not sure if companies will ever go completly electric or not, becuase of the fact people might not want to cross over. but as more Generations come, they will start ditching fuel injection and start going Voltage injected. (new term ) But hybrids are a VERY good start.

Re: Imports vs Domestics?

Yeah, I believe Ford is also coming out with a hybrid version of the Ford Explorer. It should be interesting to see since no company has put the technology in an SUV before. It will be exciting to see what they come up with so people don't have to sacrifice things such as towing capacites and drivetrain options.

Re: Imports vs Domestics?

im sure they will be using the majority motor for the towing, just SUV mode. But for daily soccer mom driving, i think that the electric will take over. Or, like some diesels do today, at a certain highway speed, the motor starts killing cylinders. v8's max kill is 4 cylinders, v6 is 3, i4 is 2(not sure if they use it on an i4) But, that save considerable gas mileage on highway, thus using less gas. I think all cars should have that technology.

Hell Diesel might even come back into the picture. Mercedes (the inventor of diesel in cars) is bringing out a new turbo diesel sedan that packs 300 ponies, and does a 0-60 in 5-6seconds. All that with a combined 40MPG!!!! Its also the cleanest diesel burning car on the market. So there are alot of options for cars.

How about a Hybrid/Diesel? that kill cylinders at higher speeds? In a Ford Exploder.

Edit: I cant type... Or spellcheck...

Re: Imports vs Domestics?

I get 30 mpg on my import. It is a 1981 Mercedes 240D. I don't need a fast, or a flashy car. I expect this car to run for another 20 years. When I was younger, I was married to my car, it ate all my money. Never again. Whatever type you pick, get one that will last as long as you take care of it.
