The U.N. has obviously become a currupt and useless body as evidenced by the Oil for Food scandal and the fact that it passed 18 resolutions against Saddam Huesein's Iraq and yet still didn't do anything. As it was so well put in "Team America: World Police" the Hans Blix puppet said that if the U.N. gets mad at Kim Jong Il then they will write him a letter telling him so. Making the point that the U.N. is to week to use force in a situation where it is necessary and what force they do use is laughable at best.

Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

Are you insane?! First of all, the Oil for Food "scandal" was not breaking ANY UN sanctions. What's wrong with Iraq trading oil for food? How is that a "scandal"? Us pulling out of the UN would be a slap in the face to the rest of the world. There is a whole world outside of the US, and to even suggest that we're not a part of that world, or that we're too big and bad to be a part of it, is asking for trouble. Second, how is the UN corrupt because of the oil for food deal? If anything, I'm surprised the US hasn't been kicked out because of the Bush administration corruption. And.... using "Team America" as an example.... man... seriously, are you taking your medications on a regular basis!?

Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

Watch it with the medication comments, Jimi...
as far as pulling out of the UN? Your argument (sqrlmstr3) doesn't show much of any reason to pull out of the UN. But the fact that they have tried in the past to override some of out constitutional rights irks me enough to question their every move. However, to remove ourselves from it would not be benificial to us and would just cause more angst toward the US from the other countries in the world.

I know, I know schutz. I was kidding. My point was, it's crazy just to disconnect ourselves from the rest of the world.

Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

Well first off the purpose of the UN is to promote world peace. You always want to try and exhaust every possibility other than war first, which is one of my arguments with the war in Iraq, but that is another thread. I personally think pulling out of the UN would do nothing more than piss off the rest of the world even more. Calling the UN useless just because of the Iraq war doesn't hold much water. I know this should be in another thread but they are related...After we threatened the possibility of war, Iraq did let inspectors in. The UN was doing its job, it was our administration that said it wasnt.

Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

And I agreed with you there. We should watch them though, they have done strange things in the past that could cause serious negative impacts on our way of life, but as long as we don't assume that everything they do is with good judgement (taken with a grain of salt if you will) then we should be fine being part of it.
As far as the medication goes, I don't like everyone assuming people on medication are crazy. I'm perfectly stable now.

come on now Jimi....this thread was about pulling out of the UN...theres no need for your anti-Bush antics in here

but i agree with everything else everyone said...it would be disastrous if the US were to pull out of the UN, we have enough people throughout the world hating us already....theres no need to make more enemies, besides, its not like the UN actually has any power over us...they didnt back us going to war, but we did it anyway, and what happened, nothin...

With an opening line like that it's pretty obvious where sqrlmstr3 stands. He's actually using quotes from a puppet movie to make his point.

The U.N. obviously needs an overhaul. It's gotten way too bloated for it's own good and I'm wondering if "permanent" members of any type of council is a good thing. But the UN is still the most widely respected global organization out there and has way more positives than negatives. It seems rather silly to pull out of an organization that has so many state representatives and done so many positive things because they refuse to follow our demands or posturing. Where would that put the US in the global community?

Times have changed and globalization is here and now. The times when we were buffered from the rest of the world by oceans are gone. We have to embrace globalization and work with it for the good of our country. That starts by being a member of the UN.

Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

But what happens when they make a treaty banning small arms? They tried back in 1994 and they're holding a council soon to look at it again. Something like that would have power over us and would negate our constitutional rights. That's why we need to be wary of what the UN does, but we must be part of them anyway.

Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

I believe the US should pull out of the Un as it was placed there to make sure that people did not invade countrys ect.. without a majority vote. When a nation can ignore this and not get done for any kind of war crime you may aswell disband it all together its a waste of time from a disgruntalled brit!! bring the black watch home

Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

We might as well just pull out. It seems our only reason for still being a member is to get support what we want and to strong arm other countries into not supporting what we don't want. The US has shown time and time again that it has no regard whatsoever for UN resolutions and recommendations.

We're not the only one in the UN.

Other countries need to start putting some effort into it.
