it finally happened!!!
Well about three months ago I took my civil servants exam. I passed with an 86. So they gave me this 45 page back ground check, did that turned it in. So I have been waiting for them to call me back for an interview, well yesterday they called and I have one on tuesaday. I'm a little bit nervious bc this is my first "real" interview. Any words of advice anyone is willing to share? Maybe if you have gone through the same process.

Good luck.
Ask questions about job responsibilities and show as much interest as possible. You want to let them feel your there for something more than a pay check.

Re: it finally happened!!!
I kind of asked a similar question a while back, when I was was going to interview for my internship (also first "real" interview).
Perhaps you already know how much your future employer is going to pay you, but in my case he asked me how much I was looking to be compensated, and I didn't know off the bat. If that happens to you, know before you get there and how much you want to make.

Only the ones that become assholes and let their badge go to their heads. Like the state trooper said to a group of cops that were speeding down the highway and asked for professional courtesy, "Well you know better than" and wrote up the ticket.
You can make out pretty good if you stick with it. My cousin's son is a state trooper. Started as an drug inforcement under cover cop and is now a captain of the state troops.

Re: it finally happened!!!
Hm. Interviews. I'd say show a little bit of personality, although I'm not sure how kosher that would be in the line of work that you're getting into. We have a very non-PC office so a very bland, "Applicant # 03-291" type of person wouldn't be hired by me.
Oh. And come up with an answer to "What is your weakness?"
Hint: Saying you have no weaknesses isn't a very good answer.

Re: it finally happened!!!
In real life, I always say "civil cervix exam", and not on purpose. /hmmm, maybe I should market myself that way. "Ok ladies, it's time for that civil cervix exam." I guess that's just my contribution to society.

Re: it finally happened!!!
IN the Interview, do not offer to much information. Do not go on rambling and rambling blabbin about your life and such.
Be respectful of the interviewer
say Please, thank you, yes, no. Do Not say "yeah", "Nah", etc.
Good luck!!! Hope you get the job you wish for.

Re: it finally happened!!!
If you want an idea of the type of questions or preparations you should do for a civil service position, try this link http://www.usajobs.gov/infocenter/interviewtips.asp . This site is for federal government positions; however, many state and municipal civil service positions follow the same format. It's a short list, but has some good points. The federal Office of Personnel Management has other job tips. Do a search for additional interview tips and possibly a list of interview questions similar to those you will face!
I served on interview boards for fire department positions (entry and management level) in several states. Here are some tips you may not find on some tip lists:
1) Wear a suit! You will be viewed by the public as the "police department"; show your potential employer how well you look and how you will exemplify the department while on patrol, meeting the citizens, and while testifying at trial.
2) Clip your fingernails. I know, sounds weird, but the first part of your body with an up close view is your hand when offered to the interviewing panel. You should look neat and well kept.
3) Shake hands with each interviewer and have a firm, but not overpowering handshake. You want a job as an officer, not as a doorman. A firm handshake demonstrates confidence; this handshake tip applies whether male or female!!
4) If interviewed by a panel, make eye contact with each panel member while responding to the interview question. This will make each member feel like you are responding to the member as an individual; also, this demonstrates to the panel your ability to speak to several persons as once and shows you can "have a handle on things" under pressure.
5) Practice some of the things you learn BEFORE the interview. If possible, have someone ask you fake interview questions and video record your session.
Remember, many people applied for the position and you are one of the few with a chance to get the job. Don't lose out because you weren't prepared. If you want it, I have some more info for you; PM me if you need it!
