Compressing .dv/.mov files

I am working on a dvd project and my files are too big for the dvd. Im using my mac and idvd to create the disk. I am limited to 4.0 gigs and my project is 4.6. Ive cut all I can from the video. Does anyone know a way I can compress some of the video slightly and not lose a ton of quality? I can do this on either my pc or mac platform. My files are currently in .dv format, and I can easily get them into .mov. I can probably convert them to mpeg4 in quicktime also if thats the solution.

I upgraded to quicktime pro, but am not sure what compression scheme or settings would be best. Id like to continue to use iDVD since I have all my menus done and it looks pretty slick.

I am on a time schedule to get then done, and of course im behind :-). Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Sean

Re: Compressing .dv/.mov files

Have you use iMovie to edit the footage?

If you export it as AVI using it's standard codec and still set the quality to best and set the audio to whatever you want, you should have able to knock the file size down a good deal without losing too much if any noticable quality or resizing to smaller resolution

If it's in a DVD format, wouldn't DVD Shrink do the job for you.

Forgot something.

Other than that you will probably have to reduce the bitrate, pixels and FPS.

Re: Compressing .dv/.mov files

I tried to compress in imovie to .avi. I set it to best quality, and when I made the dvd teh video was very pixelated. So I dont think this will work. Is there another format I should try? Thanks!

Re: Compressing .dv/.mov files

Well since you can use a PC on the file, then the other only thing I can think of using TMPGEnc Pro to convert it to DVD compatible....which is basicly MPEG2 with a really high bitrate.
There is a program for the Mac that I've seen that can do this, but I didn't care for it much and seem to take a helluva lot longer to do, in my case since I do have a rather slow G3 iBook.

TMPGEnc Pro isn't free, but I might be able to hook you up with a copy if the mods and anyone incharge around here doesn't mind I'll put it up in my webrats uploads for you.
Else I should be able to email it to you. If you'd rather do that than worry about being up on the webrats' server, PM me with your email address.
I'll have to double check that the QT plugin is included, but I know it'll work...I've never tired it using the DVD settings let along converting a QT mov to DVD.
