A Father's Agonizing Choice

You are an inmate in a concentration camp. A sadistic guard is about to hang your son who tried to escape and wants you to pull the chair from underneath him. He says that if you don't he will not only kill your son but some other innocent inmate as well. You don't have any doubt that he means what he says. What should you do?

That's a tough one. It depends on how much hope there is of getting out alive. If there isn't hope, don't do it. If there is, do it with the intention of getting revenge later.

Re: moral dilemmas #4 A Father's Agonizing Choice...

So if you don't kick the chair yourself it becomes two-for-one day at the local concentration camp??

Well, if you don't kick it you risk an uprising from the other campers...this might lead to death while you sleep or some stolen rations at din-din time....

I'd probably kick the chair myself because if someone was going to kill my son (although i'm thinking with my moms in mind) i'd rather it be me so i could be there with them and let them not be alone and afraid....i'd rather it be done by someone personal, if i was the kid....

p.s. couldn't they just cut his feet, kunta kinte stylee?

That is a tough one. I think I would kick the chair out if I knew a brutal outburst would do nothing more, than end up killing more innocent lives. If I thought this act of protest would, ultimately, save more lives (through uprisings and resistence) I would not kick the chair out.
