So now that Powell has resigned the magic number is up to six. How so you think this will effect Bush's next four years?

Conspiracy theorists are out on this one. I'm guessing the next four years of our lives are going to be getting worse with new cabinet members kissing Bush's ass to keep their jobs for more than two weeks. I'm not exactly knowledgeable (spelling? perhaps a Bushism?) on how many times this has happened before when a president started his second consecutive term, but I'm guessing that it doesn't happen often, especially with this many cabinet members.

Condoleeza's being pulled up to replace him (or at least Bush is gonna nominate her). I'm no Jimi, and i can only speak of more of a feeling than an opinion or fact, but i just think it's gonna be trouble...I wonder why John "Footloose" Ashcroft bailed....I mean, my mother said that Powell had been saying his plans were to resign, but Ashcroft seemed to fit in with Bush's "morals" and agenda....

Well, God help us all....

Re: Powell Resigns

I think he is making good moves... naming my cousin Gonzales for Ashcroft job, and now condolezza seems to re=inforce the hard line he wants to follow... powell seems like sometimes he did not support the president all of the way... I think both guys being nominated at least had shown complete fidelity and trust toward bush's agenda..

plus he is scoring points with minorities..

Actually, Secretaries of State have decided to not serve in a second term. Most recently, look at Clinton's original SECSTATE, Warren Christopher. He didn't serve a second term and was replaced by Madeline Albright. There were two times when a SECSTATE has quit in disgust in the middle of his term. The first was Wm. Jennings Bryan, the hero of the Poplulist Party who was a presidential candidate in 1896 making his famous Cross of Gold speech. He served as SECSTATE in the 1920s, and quit in disgust. Since then another one has quit, too. Read a history book for crying out loud. Cabinet positions change frequently between administrations, even when the president is the same. Reagan had a million national security advisors, including Colin Powell. But the fact is, Powell was a Realist in a Neocon cabinet. He didn't fit in. It is also no surprise that his longtime buddy Richard Armitage also quit. But in Bush's defense, he kept on several key officials from clinton's administration, like Hans Blix and George Tenet to maintain continuity and efficiency. That was a great step.
But seriously, read a history book.

Re: Powell Resigns

Powell made it clear early in the 1st term he would probably not serve a 2nd term.
