I happen to know why. In reference to western Great Lakes Native American Nations anyway. During menstruation, women are too powerful to be involved in sacred cermonies and other activities because the intensity of her link to the spirit world could disrupt or even reverse the goal of the ceremony. It was also believed that she was too important during this time to bother with her usual household duties, so she went off alone or with other bleeding ladies to pray and do the most vital spiritual work for her nation. Menstrual blood was sacred, and was smeared on the doorways of the homes of very sick individuals and newborns to protect them. Any reference to Native American bleeding ladies as "unclean" in Native American culture is from ignorant ethnocentric anthropologists who can't see the noses on their own faces.
Now, since this kind of tribal society doesn't exist, and women are expected to behave the same way during their entire cycle, I think men should do the same. If you're not willing to have sex with a bleeding lady you should stick to fucking old women who don't anymore.  |
