Re: What would you miss if you went deaf?
I'm deaf in my right ear. I have been since 1989. I had a tumor removed that had attached itself to the nerves that go to the ear so the nerve to my ear went with it. Although the ear works fine, supposedly, it is pretty much "unplugged" so to speak. There are a few problems associated with that. First, stereo is a thing of the past. There is no such thing as a right and left channel any more, no front or back, just sound. Either you hear it or you don't. My left ear works fine but the main drawback is that I have no sense of direction with my hearing. Someone can call my name in a crowd and even though I can hear them fine, I have no idea which way to look for them. Very frustrating for both of us. The right ear is still susceptible to loud noises and such so I have to wear an earplug in it to prevent damage to it but it sure does make you think about things. Like which direction is that growling dog coming from? That may not sound like much, but consider getting mauled by a big dog that you never saw coming. I was attacked in 1994 by a wild dog in the woods. I could hear him growling and barking, and I could hear him running in the leaves, but I had no idea where he was coming from. All I could do was grab a big chunk of wood and keep spinning around until I finally saw him. He was in mid-air flying at me when I managed to smack him. Teeth bared, ready to attack, and in my face. Almost a very bad situation. Plus, even though I am deaf in that ear, it constantly rings. (tinnitus) Enough to make it hard to go to sleep at times. I constantly protect my left ear mostly because losing the hearing in my right ear has made me appreciate being able to hear at all. Imagine never hearing music again, never hearing your children laugh or cry or say I love you. So what would I miss if I went completely deaf? More than you can imagine.

Look at it this way, you will not have to listen to your women bitch all the time.

Re: What would you miss if you went deaf?
I think I would just miss the luxury of being able to hear what people say to me. I wouldn't want to have to learn sign language or read lips.
