Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

And after the oil for food scam was uncovered I dont see how anyone can bring up the security council not voting for the invasion of Iraq as a justifiable reason for protesting the war.

Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

The UN does alot more than what is just shown on our news. They organize mail services for the whole world, the IMF, WHO, etc. By the United States pulling out of the UN, it would mean basically the end of it as we know it. They'd basically be kicked out of the US, unless they were offering us some kind of a sweet deal to keep their HQ in the US. I'm sure other countries would pull out almost as soon as we left because the world's biggest super power doesn't need a body to govern it. I think there are probably changes that need to be made but we need to accept some of those changes and keep bound to them. I think most people would agree that Americans are basically ignorant of the UN, including me, but what I have learned in class and reading on the Internet, the media doesn't show much of what good it actually does.

Oil for food was not a"scam". People keep blaming other countries for something as small as that. So what France was giving food to Iraq for oil. Who cares? Fracne wasn't sending food for heroin. It was valid.

If I could swap some Twinkies for a tank of gas, I'd be all over it.

True, maybe the escargot isn't a good source of fuel, however.

Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

French, german and russian officials were given oil vouchers that they could sell for a large sum of money. France and china were promised rights to oil fields if the sanctions were lifted with their help.

They voted against the war for their own personal financial reasons. I doubt they really cared if the war was just or not.

Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

Well, the war was not just. You can't really say they would have voted against the war if it was not just. We don't really know if they would or would not have. It's not like France's military would have made much of a difference, either way.

Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

i'll leave my opinions of the war in iraq out right now, but the french tried to make it seem like we were not justified in going in to iraq, but they had shady dealings going on that they were/would benefit from if we didn't go to iraq and sanctions were lifted, its not that people don't think that making money is bad, but the UN shouldn't be about financial gain, and the french poluted what should be done, with what was good for them, this isn't about american politics this is about a country in the security council caught with their pants down when it comes to national security

Re: Should we pull out of the UN?

Us going into Iraq WASN'T justified. France had every right to say that. As did most of the other world.
