I joined one in my sophmore year...after weighing the options, and after being an anti-greek. Ive heard "its like buying your friends" and "they just drink and rape girls" but its not. At least not for us. Yeah, we party, yeah, we do drink too much sometimes, but dont most
college kids?
During pledging...yeah, we were "hazed"...but nobody was punching us in the face or anything, just sometimes, yeah - we were hating it. But in that hating it i got to know and trust my pledge brothers more than i ever thought i could.
We arent one of those philantraphy groups, though we do good things in our community, we just dont brag about it. Things like mowing our old neibghor's lawns and helping them with hard work.
So overall, the benefits of greek life are incredible (at least for me) the bonding is only something a greek would understand. Dont just blindly look away. its a good thing.
