Re: All your overtime are belong to us!
They still want your arrogant self in todays market? With so many other people out of work that they can just send you on down the road and pick from the 75 other applicants? That's kewl. I know of quite a few people who have been unable to land a job in almost a year due to the slumping economy that's supposedly still "on the rise".
But doesn't this law apply to more than just new hires? I mean, what choice do they give you as an employee of 10 years with a company where you've devoted lots of time and energy into the team? You either accept it, or pound the pavement for a new job... possibly taking pay cuts or benefits cuts because it's an employers market.
The employer has no obligation to continue to pay you over time. Especially if you're in an industry that is hurting badly and shaving costs any way they can is their strong motivation to keep from going out of business or massive layoffs?
Here's another news blurb on it... so the issue is still receiving attention..... for now....

That was my point above. If an employer doesn't want to pay overtime, they should keep hours down or hire more employees, not exploit their employees by making them work excessive hours.
No overtime pay isn't about savings from not paying that time and a half wage, it's about forcing employees to work extra or "pound the pavement." If there's that much more work then hire more people and work them less than 40 hours a week.
FYI, I'm against the law.

Re: All your overtime are belong to us!
I heard about them trying this several months ago, my mother is a RN nurse who's heavy into politics. She works insane overtime since there's a nursing shortage and there's never enough RNs working anywhere to handle a week, and she stands to no longer get the cash benefits from this. They can't strike either, people would die.
This law is just one of the many, many reasons that I'm voting Kerry.

wtf
These people you know cant find a job? They dont have a skill they can take to another market or industry?
Thats why I think everyone should work sales once in their life for the experiance and training. A salesman can always find a job rather quickly.

Re: All your overtime are belong to us!
Lots of people who have been in a particular industry for 10 or so years don't have another skill they can easily take to work someplace else. Especially not at the wage they were making. They'd be lucky to get in at entry level wages. Supporting a wife and a few kids with a mortage and or a car for each of them to get to their lower paying job and afford daycare? Not likely. So you get 2 parents working at degraded wages to try and make ends meet.... it's just not happening. It's easy to say it's easy when you have a job, but when you're out of work and you have no network of friends or family that can referral you into a hiring company, pounding the pavement is very difficult right now.
Stores (sales jobs) haven't been hiring.... The people (at least around here) still aren't buying yet.
A KFC opened recently... there was a line down the street. No joke.

Where are you located?
And stores are not the only sales jobs out there.
