What do you all feel about this? I personally think that teaching abstinence exclusively is irresponsible.

This is what scares me the most:


They need to realize that kids ARE going to have sex no matter how much they tell them not to. The best thing to do is to teach them how to have safe sex, but I still think they should push abstinence but while teaching about contraceptives.

I think they should start bringing in AIDS patience in the later stages to show the kids what could happen! That'd scare the shit outta everyone!

In my health class they showed us the "STD slide show" While it didn't convince me not to have sex (which wasn't its purpose) it did convince me to always use protection (which WAS its purpose).

I saw that on the news earlier. Pretty facked up. That's why we see 13 yr old girls getting pregnant and having kids in Texas. Texas is just a fucked up state in general.

yea i think showing the consequences of sex has a greater impact than just teaching them about it

what has happened to kids nowadays... I know im only 18 but when i was 13 or 14 i wasent even thinking about sex... just goes to show you that times change and the younger they get, the more they want to have sex.

Also the amount of swearing the little kids use today is ridiculas... sure i swear but im 18 and an adult... but when 8 or 9 year olds are swearing at people... that kid needs to be hit.

Back on topic. Abstinence is great and all, but it uneralistic. Kids 13-14-15 shouldnt be having sex, but if they do, i want them knowing how to put a condom on. dont some states have laws that say you can only teach abstinence?

teaching only abstinence is stupid and irresponsible. they need more information to make good choices and telling a kid not to do something will only make them want to do it more.

Abistinence is the only form of birth control that works 100% of the time.

I agree with Andy, when I was 13 or 14, I didn't have sex on the mind. But then again, when I was that age, we didn't have stores like Ab&Fitch trying to sell thongs to 8 and 9 year old girls...

I have two daughters...one is ten and I am terrified. She is WAY too advanced for her age and I have seen really young girls with strollers. I remember being young and I am terrified she will be as dumb as me...sex ed in school is a plus IF they can come up with a way to scare the hell outta these kids. I am seriously thinking of locking my children away until they are about 30 even if it is illegal. Sex ed when I was a kid was a joke. They didn't touch on any of the important stuff, like pregnancy, disease, or even death. They just said it could happen, but didn't explain what the it was.

The whole "abstinance only" thing pisses me off. It's just a thinly veiled political move designed to appeal to the puritanical mindset of conservative voters.

Why is it in this country that we are bombarded with sexual images everywhere we go, but when we want to give our children the knowledge they will need in order to make responsible and safe decisions, all of a sudden it's "promoting promiscuity"?
