oh , there are plenty of brick/block houses and businesses .
i think that due to the fact that there are a lot of trees here in the usa as well as canada most of the residential construction tends to be wood/stick built .

one tends to see more brick/block buildings where there is a lack of trees to provide cheap lumber and the local materials (geologically speaking) lends itself to having brickworks .
another factor is insulation . many of the older brick and block buildings had poor insulation (a real bitch when it hits -40F .) . trying to insulate them was more costly that building from wood from the ground up .

there are many stone quarries here . many of the buildings in mid-west towns (pipestone minnesota and a blonde come to mind ) have some very old buildings made from materials quarried within a short distance ... durable as hell .
concrete was used as the foundation material .

the town i am in had a brickworks running many years ago .
the old high school was one building constructed from their products ... they are going to tear it down (after they get rid of all the asbestos !)
hopefully i can get enough used brick to do paved paths , elevated garden beds and a couple of other "honey do" projects at our home .

oh yeah ... back on topic ... it's -30F this morning , the wind is 20-30 gusting to 40 mph , the wind chill is -50 to -65 F .
and i gotta go finish pulling in a bunch of CAT5 runs ...

We had threats of snow recently and had a ton of it in the nearby hills. Now, for the last 3 days, we almost need our air conditioners to be turned on!

I would submit that this cold winter idea is archaic and unnecessary. I think it’s time for a re-vote. I think even should the public choose to maintain the chill for three to four months of the year, they will all agree that by February, it’s just about time for these deep snows to cease.
