I don't believe Nascar fits into the sports category, but I would be interested to hear any of ya'all comments on this redneck pastime.

"Redneck Pastime?"

well, it's mostly true I guess. It's kind of fun to watch when there's no football on. 200 mph crashes FTW!

Re: Nascar

I used to love IndyCar back in the day.. when it was teh CART series.. then it split to Champcar and IRL.. I still enjoy it to some extent, ChampCar over IRL, Its just not the same anymore..

I am a pretty big Nascar fan now.. I really enjoy these 43 car fields, and while maybe 1/3 of the field in any given day can win, there still is some exciting racing. and passing somewhere on every lap.. In IRL or champcar.. the fields are only 20 cars or so and they get spread out pretty quickly with only maybe a few cars only having a realistic shot at winning..

Re: Nascar

I dont know if I would call it a sport. I do watch but I like tracks like Bristol. A few laps in people are being lapped and they push each other all over the track.

Re: Nascar

I do not consider Nascar a sport. There is no doubt it is a competition, and in fact a very difficult one. But I do not place it among events which require the kind of physical ability of football, basketball, or even golf. Yes, physical ability is involved, but not what one might call athleticism. Athleticism is what defines a sport for me.

On top of that, I find Nascar to be incredibly boring. Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of racing. I love to watch F1 and LeMans races, rallies, and other types of racing that involve turning both left AND right. It is also more interesting when the cars involved are not basically all the exact same machine. A Nascar restrictor plate race is the most excruciatingly dull event ever. Because all the cars perform the same. You might argue that it showcases the skills of the drivers. I would argue that it causes a cluster of cars where no one can really drive, and where many will simply wreck their machines because of said cluster. A good wreck is one where someone pushes the envelope too far. If a driver tries to shave a tenth by going into a sharp corner 2 mph faster than he should and ends up spinning or flipping, it is much more interesting to me than seeing someone get forced into a wall because there simply isn't room.

That said, the road races in whichever series still runs them are significantly more interesting. Banking left and drafting for 4 hours just isn't that exciting.

Rant over.

This is what happens when you live in Wisconsin and are bombarded with this crap all the damn time. Sorry.

Re: Nascar

Nascar kicks ass. Fun to watch and coincides great with the football season. i.e. two weeks after the superbowl, it is the Daytona 500. How cool is that?

Re: Nascar

I'd say it's definitely more of a sport than poker.

I fucking hate that people actually argue that it might be.

Re: Nascar

nascar is good to have on the tv on dedicated "nap" sunday afternoons. the repetitive sounds of the cars passing the mics helps put me to sleep. i sleep for an hour, check the progress of the race, doze back out, wake up again in 30 mins, check progress again, take another small nap and then voila its time to watch the last 15 laps or so.

how's that for a run-on sentence?
