AUDIO QUESTION: turning recordings into MP3’s

I want to enlarge my mp3 collection on my hardrive mainly because im trying to become a DJ . I was listening to the radio one night and realized my collection would be bigger, and have more variety in it if there was a way to somehow record from the radio, place the recordings in my hardrive, edit the recordings, and then turn the recordings into MP3's. Is this possible ? Any help would greatly be appreciated
