Computer question? or Gaming question?

I dont know where to place this question in, either computer or gaming, but here it goes anyways . . .

Im trying to connect my Playstation 2 to my modem but i cant get a connection. Ive contacted both RoadRunner Cable and Sony and neither of them were able to help me out with this problem. I have a broadband connection, a modem with no brand or label on it.

The Playstation 2 came with a online-start up disk. It takes you through a process thats is supposed to give you a connetion and save it on to a memory card for future use. Ive tried the automatic setup, which is supposed set everything up for you, that was not the case. So then i went and did it manually, by inputting my IP Adrress and host name, which also failed

Does anyone now whats wrong here? Is there some kind of filtering going on that does not allow me connect online? Not even the proffesionals can help me ! Any advice would be useful . . . .

how is your PC connected to the modem? Do you have a router configuration?

Re: Computer question? or Gaming question?

not sure how you'd do this without a router short of just disconnecting your PC & connecting the PS to the modem directly. If thats how you are planning on hooking up then all you need to do is set your PS up with the same IP address/gateway info that you have set up on your PC.

truly though you should invest the 50 - 60 bucks in a router so you can have both devices hooked up at the same time, sharing the modem connection to the internet.

routers are also a better way to go also simply because most come with firewalls to protect your home devices from internet attacks...not a good thing to connect your PC direct to the modem, even with a software firewall solution installed...much safer for you to firewall thru hardware like a router.
