Re: Barry Bonds Discussion Thread
I've kinda been indifferent about Barry Bonds, although I haven't watched any games this season for more than an inning or so because Barry Bonds and steroids ALWAYS gets mentioned in every game...the fucking announcers concentrate on that more than the damn game...what kinda soured me to him was when he refused to sign the ball for the soldier who happens to be a huge Bonds fan, when he caught the 713 ball.
Similar issues with Roger Maris when he took Ruth's record...they were making a huge deal about it and saying that it wouldn't be an official record because they had more games in the regular season than Ruth did...that * bullshit was weak...
I think everyone's hating on the man because he's hitting the ball a damn mile...Mark McGwire went through the same thing when he broke the record, but he admitted to taking steroids at one time, and creatine was the demon back then. I remember as he got closer to the record the more reports that came out in SI and stuff about creatine and how it's just a legal steriod, which in a way it is, but it's got 1 molecule difference from anabolic steroids, which means no roid rage, or the weird juicing side effects.
*edit* Sosa got nailed when he got caught corking his bats...what a fucking idiot...hope he's enjoying that stellar 14-19 record...

Re: Barry Bonds Discussion Thread
McGwire's controversy was over androstenedione...which at the time, a lot of high school athletes were taking because it was readily available at your local GNC. Andro sales went out the roof when a huge star like Big Mac was taking it. The companies producing it weren't telling anyone that it was a cousin to steroids, because technically, it wasn't an anabolic steriod...and they were making millions. All of a sudden the story broke about what it actually was the season after he hit 70, THEN came all of the questions. About this time, Barry Bonds was getting older, looking for an edge, getting jealous, AND COINCIDENTALLY was about the same time he was introduced to Victor Conte of BALCO fame. Read the new book for detailed info...i haven't YET although I plan to.
Long story short, it was andro that caused the stir, not creatine. Creatine is just a chemical that the body naturally produces and when supplemented in high doses during periods of heavy workouts, HELPS to reduce recovery time and soreness...in a completely different way than steroids. It causes absolutely NO health risks other than dehydration which is why you see all of the football players at your colleges carrying around gallon jugs of water that they are ordered to drink every day.

Re: Barry Bonds Discussion Thread
I know it's just delaying the fact that it's going to happen.....but thank you Juan Pierre!
Did you see the look on Bonds's face when Juan came down with that ball? If looks could kill.
I don't wanna see Bonds break it in Frisco. I wanna hear him get booe'd out of the Stadium.

Re: Barry Bonds Discussion Thread
Now only if Juan Pierre could hit...
Bonds is a giant bag of douche. JP made a great play...what's he supposed to do? Let the ball leave the park? Then Bonds pulls the wrist flip thing because he's teh ghey. And JP looked at him like haha.
I wish he would have broken his ankle when he rounded first on that play.

Re: Barry Bonds Discussion Thread
im a bit divided on the topic myself.
on one hand, there seems to be entirely too much evidence that he used steroids. i hate when people use the word "cheat" when they talk about steroid use, so i will try not to.
and im not really sure how to deal with him. if we look at past cases, we cant kick him out of baseball. we cant place asterisks next to any of his numbers. to do that we would have to do that to everyone else who has been caught. jason giambi admitted to steroid use (props for him) and now hes back, doing really well this season, and nobody questions his numbers because they know hes clean. they did nothing with the stats he piled while he was using.
baseball cant do anything with bonds' home run total, in part because its THEIR fault they didnt catch him. yes, bonds made the decision to use steroids, and no, thats not cool in my opinion, but it was up to MLB to test for it. in the long run, they saw that barry bonds was hitting a shit ton of home runs, they saw that they were getting great news coverage, and they sat back and enjoyed it.
if he breaks it, i dont think they have any choice but to let the numbers stand.

Re: Barry Bonds Discussion Thread
Barry Bonds memorabilia isn't worth as much as it used to be. I saw a segment on SC and they were talking about how one of his homerun bats was getting $20,000 a few years ago...now he's only getting about $6k. I figure that ball will appreciate once the cloud over his head disappears (i'll be fucking pissed if it does) in 3-5 years, but right now it might be worth a few grand.
Reportedly the kid put it in a safe deposit box.
