How to keep files when rebooting Win XP
Posted in the thread of Windows XP Rebooting Help http://forums.webrats.com/showthread.php?t=101188, I want to completely reboot my computer to bring it back to the state when I first bought the computer. However, I also want to keep some files; Word Documents, MPEG Layer 3 Audio files (MP3 files for iTunes), and more. How should I back up my files? Can I create a new drive in my computer, with my files that I want stored in it, without being erased during my reboot and reformating of my computer? Or should I buy a USB flash drive? What are the ways I can secured my files from being erased? Thanks.

Re: How to keep files when rebooting Win XP
You are talking about a reformat, Rebooting is when you turn the pc off then on..
The best way I have found is by installing another Hard drive on the PC. Then you can drag and drop whatever you want to save, reformat the other drive with the OS and drag and drop or install from the second HD.

How many Megs you planning on keeping? And do you have a cd or dvd burner? If ya have a burner just put whatever files you want into a zip file and copy them onto a disk/disks. Or, as Sgtlazer said, install a new drive( or get a plug in.)

I do have a cd burner. I'll try your method. I'll buy CD-RW and then copy the files onto the cd. But I've got about 500 songs totaling to about 7 GB. That's 10 700MB CD-RW's. I might be better off paying $100 for the external hard drive. Forget it. I'm a cheap ass. I'm buying the CD-RW.

Re: How to keep files when rebooting Win XP
Why not get a DVD burner, not much more expensive than a CD-RW? DVD-R discs are dirt cheap nowdays and they hold 4.7Gb each. They also write a lot faster as well.
If you partition your harddrive, you can save all your files and documents in one of the non-Windows partitions. Then you can reformat and reinstall your Windows partition without losing those files.
